💻 "Remote" Red Flags

📝 Process Red Flags

🌎 Company Red Flags

Common Remote Job Scams

📦 Package Reshipping

You receive packages at home and reship them elsewhere. Sounds easy? You're laundering stolen goods and will be liable when caught.

Warning Signs:
  • "Quality control" or "logistics coordinator"
  • Receive packages, inspect, reship
  • Get paid per package
  • Work from home, no experience needed

💳 Check Cashing

They send you checks to deposit, then wire money elsewhere. The checks bounce, you're out the money, and possibly facing fraud charges.

Warning Signs:
  • "Financial coordinator" or "payment processor"
  • Deposit checks and wire portion elsewhere
  • Keep percentage as your "salary"
  • Use your personal bank account

💻 Equipment Purchase Scam

They "hire" you and send a check for equipment. You buy equipment from their vendor (actually them), the check bounces, equipment is worthless or never arrives.

Warning Signs:
  • Overpay for equipment, send back difference
  • Must use their specific vendor
  • Check arrives before formal onboarding
  • Pressure to act quickly

💼 Fake Recruiter

Someone contacts you about a job at a real company. They're not affiliated with the company - they want your SSN, bank info, or upfront fees.

Warning Signs:
  • Email from gmail/yahoo, not company domain
  • Can't find them on LinkedIn
  • Vague about their role at the company
  • Request SSN before official offer

🎓 Training Fee Scam

You're "hired" but must pay for training, certification, or software first. Legitimate employers never charge for onboarding.

Warning Signs:
  • Pay for training/certification upfront
  • Buy their proprietary software
  • "Investment in yourself"
  • Deducted from first paycheck (that never comes)

👤 Data Harvesting

No real job exists - they just want your personal information for identity theft or to sell your data.

Warning Signs:
  • Extensive personal questions upfront
  • Request SSN, bank info before interview
  • Vague job description
  • No interview with real person

🏠 "Hybrid Bait"

Job posted as remote but location requirements appear later. Sometimes the "remote" aspect disappears entirely after starting.

Warning Signs:
  • "Remote" but must be near specific city
  • "Remote to start, then in-office"
  • Location listed in fine print
  • "Remote" defined as work-from-home Fridays

💸 MLM/Pyramid Scheme

Disguised as remote jobs but actually recruiting for multi-level marketing. You'll make money "recruiting" others, not actual work.

Warning Signs:
  • "Unlimited earning potential"
  • "Be your own boss"
  • Focus on recruitment
  • Must buy products to sell

Real Remote Jobs vs Fake Ones

✅ Legitimate Remote Jobs

  • Clear company identity - Verifiable website, LinkedIn, news presence
  • Professional email domain - [email protected] not [email protected]
  • Standard interview process - Video calls, multiple rounds, real people
  • Reasonable salary - Market rate for the role, not "up to $5k/week"
  • No upfront costs - They pay you, not the other way around
  • Specific job duties - Clear responsibilities, requirements, team structure
  • Company provides equipment - Laptop shipped to you or stipend
  • Background check after offer - Not before interview
  • W-2 or proper 1099 - Legitimate tax status
  • Benefits mentioned - Health, 401k, PTO for full-time roles

❌ Scam Red Flags

  • Vague company info - Can't verify they exist, or impersonating real company
  • Free email addresses - Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook for "official" communication
  • Chat-only interviews - WhatsApp, Telegram, Google Chat only
  • Too-good-to-be-true pay - $50/hr for entry-level data entry
  • Upfront payment required - Training, equipment, software, certification
  • Vague responsibilities - "Various tasks" "flexible duties" "as needed"
  • Use your own money first - Buy equipment, we'll reimburse (we won't)
  • SSN/bank info immediately - Before formal offer or onboarding
  • Paid by check or crypto - Not standard direct deposit
  • Urgency pressure - "Must respond today" "limited spots"

Verify Any Remote Job

1. Verify the Company

  • Google "[Company name] + scam" or "+ reviews"
  • Check BBB, Glassdoor, LinkedIn company page
  • Look up the company on state business registry
  • Find the job on their official careers page

2. Verify the Recruiter

  • Email matches company domain (not just name)
  • Find them on LinkedIn with work history
  • Check if their role matches their title
  • Call company main line to verify they work there

3. Verify the Process

  • Interview should involve video with real people
  • Offer letter before any paperwork
  • Never pay anything to get a job
  • Personal info only during official onboarding

When in Doubt

Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is. No legitimate employer will pressure you, ask for money, or be vague about who they are. It's always okay to slow down, verify, and ask questions.
