Just got laid off?

Breathe. You're not alone. 2.1 million Americans are laid off every month. This toolkit will guide you through the next 90 days.

First 24 Hours - Critical Actions

Complete these tasks TODAY. Check them off as you go.

0%
  • Don't sign ANYTHING yet
You typically have 21 days (45 if over 40) to sign severance. Take your time.
  • Request all documents in writing
Severance agreement, COBRA info, final paycheck date, unused PTO payout.
  • Screenshot/save your work accomplishments
Performance reviews, kudos, metrics, projects. Your access may be cut soon.
  • Download personal contacts
Export your work contacts to personal email. LinkedIn connections only if you connected.
  • File for unemployment TODAY
Don't wait. Processing takes 2-3 weeks. File at your state's unemployment website.
  • Check your health insurance end date
Coverage usually ends on last day of month. Know exactly when.
  • Don't post on social media yet
Wait 24-48 hours. You're emotional. A poorly worded post can hurt you.
  • Tell one trusted person
Not for advice yet. Just to say it out loud and not be alone.

What NOT To Do Today

  • STOP Don't bad-mouth your employer (even if deserved)
  • STOP Don't mass-apply to jobs in a panic
  • STOP Don't make major financial decisions today
  • STOP Don't isolate yourself completely
  • STOP Don't assume this is permanent (it's not)

Week 1 Action Plan

Now that the shock has passed, execute these tasks.

Days 1-2
Financial Triage
  • List all monthly expenses
    Subscriptions, bills, rent, loans. Everything.
  • Calculate your runway
Use the Runway Calculator tab to see how long you can last.
  • Cancel unnecessary subscriptions
Netflix can wait. Gym membership? Use the free outdoor one called "outside."
Days 2-3
Severance Review
  • Read severance agreement carefully
Look for non-compete, non-disparagement, release of claims.
  • Use our Severance Negotiator
Most people don't know severance is negotiable. It is.
  • Consider consulting an employment lawyer
Many offer free 30-min consultations. Worth it for packages over $10k.
Days 3-5
Healthcare Decision
  • Calculate COBRA vs Marketplace
Use our COBRA Calculator. COBRA is often NOT the best option.
  • Check healthcare.gov for subsidies
Job loss = special enrollment. Subsidies may make ACA cheaper than COBRA.
  • Schedule any urgent medical appointments
Dental cleaning, prescriptions, anything while current coverage lasts.
Days 5-7
Job Search Prep
  • Update your resume
Use our ATS Scanner at /tools.html to optimize it.
  • Update LinkedIn (carefully)
Don't mark "Open to Work" yet if you want to negotiate quietly.
  • Make a target company list
20 companies you'd actually want to work for. Quality over quantity.
